Hair types vary just as blood types and skin types do, and it’s a fascinating aspect of genetics. It’s important to note that hair type isn’t always determined by race or ethnicity, but rather it’s a result of the genes passed down from our ancestors. The Hair Chart
This is a chart we developed that helps you determine your hair type. There are 4 different types. Each type has its own subtype. These subtypes get more specific to help you determine your hair type. Then once you determine your hair type, you will be able to learn how to better care for your hair.
For example, if you have type 4C hair like me, it is the hardest to manage because of the frizzy, tight curls. People with this type of hair very often use chemical treatments to tame their hair. Thereby, they lose their natural hair texture. I have been trying to get rid of the chemically processed hair for years. If hair becomes over processed, it can become very brittle, extremely frizzy and will have an extremely slow growth rate. These natural hair care products are a life saver for me and my hair, and helped me get my natural state back.
I love my curls, but I want them to be silky smooth and more manageable. When I was younger, they were just like that. I want that texture back. However, all great things take time. So while I am waiting, I am doing my research on how to better care for my hair type. We created the perfect day washing system that helps me to keep my hair natural and manageable. Now, lets dive further into the various hair types and see what type you may have.
Hair Type 1 – A, B and C
For those with type 1 you have generally straight hair. However, straight hair also comes with texture. Thus, you have the various hair types for category 1.
- Type 1A: Very straight hair with no bend, bounce, or wave. It can be very difficult to add texture to it. As a result, people with straight hair use products & tools to make it curlier from time to time.
- Type 1B: Straight but has a little wave to it. Not much but enough to have a bit of bounce and subtle curves. This type of hair is a bit easier to curl without the need for chemicals & heat.
- Type 1C: Has a combination of straight hair with a bit of curl. This type of hair can be affected by weather conditions such as humidity, but this is not always the case.
Type 2 Hair: A, B and C
Type 2 hair type has a general wavy texture. However, the waves vary. Use this chart to determine exactly which hair type you have.
- Type 2A: Typically features gentle waves that are loose, with the hair appearing at the top of the head. As the hair progresses downwards, the waves gradually take shape, although they are extremely delicate and fine, lacking any noticeable texture.
- Type 2B: Straight hair at the crown but the waves form at the middle section. The waves in this hair type are distinctly defined, taking the shape of an S as they flow downwards. The texture of this type of hair is often rougher and may tend to frizz.
- Type 2C: Has waves that extend from the crown to the tip, often taking the form of a curl or ringlet. The texture of this hair type is sometimes rough and the hair itself is thick. However, this type of hair is very susceptible to frizzing.
Hair Type 3 – A, B, and C
Type 3 hair is a highly coveted hair type, as it is characterized by big, voluptuous curls that appear smooth, shiny, and full of volume. Such hair exudes an aura of health and beauty that many aspire to achieve. Regrettably, this hair type is largely determined by one’s genetic makeup, and not everyone is blessed with it.
- Type 3A: Has loose spirals that are distinct in their S-shape, with a texture that is supple and bouncy. Such curls are typically characterized by a radiant, glossy appearance.
- Type 3B: Has tighter curls, ranging from ringlets to corkscrews. This hair type has a greater amount of volume and density, and it tends to be coarser in texture.
- Type 3C: Has by its curly-coily texture, featuring tightly coiled corkscrew curls. This hair type may show some shrinkage, resulting in greater volume and density, giving the appearance of having more hair.
Type 4 Hair – Natural Hair Care Products
People with this hair type often resort to chemical treatments to control their curly and frizzy hair. Fortunately, a new product has emerged that can manage this hair type without relying on ANY chemicals. However, before we dive into that, let’s take a closer look at Type 4 hair.
- Type 4A: Has tightly coiled curls that form an S-shape, with a density that ranges from wiry to fine. This hair type is typically thick and coarse in texture, with springy coils that can be quite dense.
- Type 4B: Has curls that resemble a z-shape pattern, featuring sharp edges and angles. This hair type has tighter curls that are less defined in shape. The texture of Type 4B hair can vary widely, ranging from fine and thin to wiry and coarse.
- Type 4C: Is characterized by its density, thickness, and coarseness, with curls that are not well-defined. The curls in Type 4C hair can vary from super fine to wiry and coarse. However, the curls in this hair type are fragile and can easily lose their shape. Type 4C hair is also prone to severe frizzing.
